As a part of my Service Learning, I have been teaching a student from past few weeks. The student being a native of Nepal was having a hard time coping up with the American culture and educational standards and I got a chance through Service Learning to help him out with his homework, class learning and assignments. I liked teaching him it was pretty exciting and self satisfying experience for me as a teacher to help someone in his studies. I would help him with his homework, assist him in understanding and revising the subject concepts that he had learned in the exams and would make sure that he is preparing well with his exams.
The most memorable thing of teaching him was when I was told that I look like one of them, making reference to my skin and color. I have never envisioned myself looking like a person from Nepal however I was pretty amused by their comments. The expression stunned me because I am from US and not the guy has presumed me from Nepal as I am helping a boy from Nepal in his studies. However, it was a great experience of teaching a Nepalese student and I would like to continue doing this service in future too. I also helped the boy in preparation of his exams last month and surprisingly he performed really well which was displaced in his results too. The guy who was struggling to pass from last 1 year suddenly was ranked 12th in the class of 38 students. He was quite excited and gave most of the credit to me.
Also, through this experience I came to understand the difference between Nepalese culture and American Culture a great deal. People usually are conservative in nature in that part of the world, compare to people in US. Also, families in Nepalese culture are closely knitted to each other wherein parents, grandparents and children prefer to live together in unity. They have a major inclination towards Chinese food and make some of the most authentic Chinese food in their home.
